YOU MUST GO HERE. We stayed in Charleston for two nights, and ate here both nights. 'nuff said.

Pros: Food is amazing. This place literally has the best iced coffee I've EVER had in my life. They have cute items for sale around the restaurant. Very cozy. If you have to wait, there isn't a bar...BUT they will let you take a drink outside to stay cool. The staff is really on their toes and works hard to serve you quickly. Cons: Not a lot of parking. This place is VERY busy and rather small--you might have to wait for a while and there is nowhere to sit inside to wait so you're waiting outside.

I love this place! The fried chicken is amazing and the mac & cheese definitely had it's own unique taste...different, but delicious. So far I've had the blue plate fried chicken special, the Caprese sandwich, and the fried green tomato sandwich. It's very small though, so go before or after peak dining times. I will definitely keep this in my rotating dining-out menu! Don't go when you are in a rush though, even though the place was empty, me and my guest waited an awfully long time for our food.

Wow... The fried chicken special was amazing! Staff was real friendly and the decor is adorable. Would definitely recommend to friends in the area.

This was a fun little place to hide away from the rain. A local directed us here. It's small & intimate. It might hold 40 people. When we (8 of us) were there in mid-afternoon, it only had one other group. The pictures tell the story of the ambiance, the tables were covered with brown butcher paper. The food was flavorful, and the price was reasonable. We went a tad over board with appetizers & dessert. It's simple, good cooking.

BEST BRUNCH EVER! Since we are visiting my daughter she select this place for brunch. Thanks goodness we had reservations because of the rain the outside was seating was not available. The food was amazing. My husband ordered country fried steak, my daughter had the eggs Benedict trio, and I had the hash special. On Sunday $10 bottomless mimosas are available. Every dish was cooked to perfection. The service was great. The host was cordial and friendly. Our server was informative. Next time we visit Charleston this will be our first

The food is definitely 5-star worthy. I've been twice, for an early dinner and for brunch, and the service has been awful both times. We're talking wait times over 30 minutes for food for brunch, which is just nuts. The dinner service was ok, she just wasn't overly friendly and messed up a couple of things on our orders, which were easily fixed, but she seemed kind of annoyed that we asked to have them fixed at all. As long as you go in knowing that the service isn't going to be great, then you should have a good experience. In terms of the food, I've never had a bad dish. I highly recommend: Dinner: Fried Green Tomatoes, If they have the broccoli and cheese fritters as an app, definitely get that, bang bang shrimp & grits, piggy mac, candied brussels, buttermilk fried chicken, chimichurri beef sirloin, mashed potato croquettes Brunch: Country-fried steak and eggs, chicken biscuits

HANDS DOWN BEST BRUNCH PLACE EVER!! Cutest little building and great service. Got the bang bang shrimp and grits and they were the best I've ever had anywhere in Charleston. So much shrimp and alittle spicy. Delicious!! Also got to try the beignets which literally melted in my mouth. And to top everything off they do bottomless mimosas for $10 and they keep them coming. Every time my drink would be halfway full they would fill it to the top!!! I love this place:)

Dropped in while traveling and the pasta special was very good, but,at $20, was very overpriced (they pull the restaurant trick of not listing prices for their specials).

Incredible meal. Three of us had 7:30pm reservations for Saturday evening. Arrived on time. Table was ready. Food and service were second to none!! We ordered fried chicken; shrimp and ham carbonara; seared scallops with grits--all delicious !

Delicious food and friendly staff. Brunch on Sunday is wonderful. Small restaurant so you may have to wait but the croquet madame and the variations on eggs Benedict are worth it!

It was freezing cold inside, bring a sweater. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. We had the bang bang shrimp & grits and the buttermilk fried chicken and mashed potato croquettes.

Cute and so yummy. Love the atmosphere and food is wonderful! Great date night, kids would be ok but this is a quiet candle lit place that you wouldn't be able to take all in with little ones. Fried chicken and Mac and cheese is a must!

Went for Sunday Brunch and it was absolutely delicious. We sat outside, and arrived at the right time. By the time we left, there were lots of people waiting for tables. I had the shrimp and grits. They were just right. A little kick, but not too spicy. Just the right size. My dad had eggs, sausage, grits. He said all was delicious. We were jealous of the guy next to us with the beignets. They came out hot covered in powdered sugar. Yum! The service was excellent. We will return soon!

Just left Angel Oak and had brunch. We came down to golf Cougar Point at Kiawah Island. The food was Outstanding!!! My buddy and I ordered the fish of the day which was salmon, broiled and seasoned to perfection. It came with cheese grits and scrambled eggs and fruit plus an English muffin. I had a side of pancakes. Our waitress, Rhiannon was wonderful making sure our coffee and Sweet tea was replenished. My other two buddies had the chicken and biscuit and bacon cheese and egg croissant. This place is great for low country cuisine. Before we left, we had to order the beignets; that melted in our mouths. Our total bill with tips was $21 apiece for our party of four. This is a place I would go out of my way to eat at. Enjoy!

This is one of the best meals we have had in a very, very long time. I suggest reservations be made, as this place fills up fast. My wife had the chicken and mack, outstanding meal. I had the beef special with grits,it was the best. The waiter was one of the best and the service outstanding.

Been going to Angel Oak since it opened. Gets busy on the weekends for brunch so call ahead. Weekday blue plate specials are delicious and the fries are out of this world. Cute and quaint. Would make a great date night spot!

So glad I tried this place again. You absolutely must try the fried chicken. Friends were visiting from Atlanta this weekend. Instead of dealing with the crowds on King, we opted for a place off the beaten path, Angel Oak, on Friday 6/20/14. Oh my word, the fried chicken... The honey drizzle balanced the salty breading perfectly. It was almost like it wasn't breaded at all and just had really crispy skin. It was juicy and retained heat. When I got to my third piece of chicken, it was still piping hot. Mark was our server again and again, he was amazing. Nicole, owner/chef's wife, chatted us up for a while. She is friendly and genuinely cared about our feedback.

I love this place! When I asked my fourteen year old niece what some of her favorite places to eat were, this was the first restaurant she mentioned- I was kind of surprised not to hear something along the line of McDonalds from her. So, my husband and I decided to try it, and I think I might be asking my niece for more suggestions! The place is really cute, with fresh flowers on the table, which I thought was a nice touch. The service was very friendly. We were there for lunch and I had the fish of the day sandwich, wish was a crab fritter with macaroni and cheese as my side. It was delicious. My husband had the Saturday special which is country fried steak with a potato croquette and salad. He is from Texas and takes country fried steak VERY seriously. He proclaimed it the best version outside of the great state of Texas. A few weeks later we took my parents back for brunch which was an equally great experience. This restaurant has quickly become one of my new favorites.

  • Kelly R.

Excellent meal. I had the shrimp and grits, DH had the country fried steak. Portions were a little smaller than he likes, but neither of us left hungry. The beignets are to die for! The atmosphere is funky, in an old house. If you're coming from the west, really keep an eye out - it's easy to miss.

What used to be a small charming restaurant with exceptional food and service is now just another place to eat in Charleston. It has been about 2 years since I last visited and boy has this place changed. We went for lunch and not only was the staff more focused on folding the linens in the dining room rather than waiting on our table, but just about every recipe has changed and is no where near as good as it used to be. It was very disappointing and I won't be so quick to refer tourists and friends to dine here. The passion that was once there is definitely missing. :(

Excellent food! On a road trip from Miami, the reviews were right. Try the fried chicken, green tomatoes and mac and cheese! so good!

  • Wayne T.

This place is awesome. The shrimp and grits were the best I have ever eaten as were the fried green tomatoes. The soup of the day was a smokey tomatoe bisque that was to die for. The beignets were so good they brought tears to your eyes. Our server, Mark, did a wonderful job and was "Johnny on the spot" with recommendations and making sure our food was served hot. I will definitely stop here any time we are in Charleston.

Specials keep me coming back - love the variety in their menu. Tonight the ravioli and the chimichurri steak were a hit!

Awesome place. Great food and service. The shrimp and the slaw is amazing. The chef takes pride in his work and it shows. It was very cold in the restaurant but the service and food made up for it.

Walked right in and not have to wait on the Sunday for bunch which was nice. Ordered the powdered donuts and they were raw.. So we asked for a new batch and after a quick chat with augmentative Nicole about how they we're cooked they were remade. My mom and husband's meal were amazing but my biscuits were doughy and not fully cooked I didn't even tell our server because I wants to eat and leave. Cute place, a little crowded but staff could use some tlc. Over all was good cooking but just need to cook till dough is not raw.

My husband and I were on the hunt for a restaurant in the West Ashley area, and came across Angel Oak Restaurant on Yelp. With 4.5 stars, we decided it was worth a shot. --Best. Decision. Ever. On this particular Tuesday, they had a special going: Two entrees and dessert for $30. Add a wine pairing for $10/person. My husband decided on their fried chicken, mac&cheese, and collard greens while I went for the shrimp carbonara. His chicken was the best fried chicken we have ever had. My meal was great, but his was off the charts. We had beignets for dessert, and they were absolute perfection. Ambiance is great, wait staff was attentive, and the food was amazing. The place itself is small, so definitely make a reservation to be safe. They also have a cute little outdoor patio. Looks like we will have to come back with our pooch!

  • Caroline N.

My favorite in the area by far. Wish they had brunch everyday. The croque Madame is unbeatable and the beignets are rolled in crack. Fast and friendly service to boot. And freakishly affordable even with all the local ingredients and creative menu. They know what they're doing.

We went back to Angel Oak Restaurant to visit for lunch, so I figured I'd write an update. The food is 5 stars. The service is more like 3 stars. The food was delicious. I had the fried shrimp lunch special with macaroni and cheese and a side salad. It's supposed to come with fries and slaw but they let me substitute for $1, and I'm glad I did. I'm not a huge fry fan and the macaroni and cheese was delicious- very creamy and came out piping hot. The shrimp were breaded lightly and fried, but not greasy. My husband had the fried chicken, french fries, and salad. The dressing for the salad is homemade, and he loved his meal (3 pieces of chicken), but said the chicken's breading was a little salty... still delicious. Both of us left full and the price was excellent. The lunch menu is pretty big with daily specials and regular options, lots to choose from and good portions. No complaints there! As far as service goes, I got the impression that if you were a regular, you got 5 star service. Well... we're not regulars. The restaurant wasn't packed or crowded... but I didn't feel like the service was WOWing... other diners were greeted by name, the wait staff chatted with them, etc. It's great that the regulars are appreciated and they get to know you, but I'd love to be a regular here with how good the food is at lunch (and I live super close)... I was just a little turned off by the lack of attention. Our food was a little long coming out as well, and when it did, my special had fries instead of macaroni (which they quickly remedied by replacing it with macaroni, and I still paid the $1 extra). I'd definitely come back. The food was great! Super close, plenty of parking, inexpensive for the portions... you really can't beat it. Hopefully the service was just off today...

The food is excellent and the waitress Mallory was a doll. We loved everything everyone ordered. The bang bang buns, fried chicken, buffalo chicken sandwich and sides where fresh and flavorful.

Three visits, with and without kids to be sure... we were excited to try it. The reviews were glowing, and perhaps all the 4 and 5 stars were by friend and family because, it is not. The restaurant is not a 3 star. It's just the best this sad stretch of highway has to offer. Brunch: "Beignets" are not and grossly over-sugared. And our neighbors agreed. Twice. Salmon salad is the smallest piece of fish you'll ever see atop a bag of 3x washed grocery store arugula. Dinner. The burger: They should visit Big Belly, Husk, or even Tattooed Moose. It's tiny, it's burned, and the meat is not tasty. The fish dish: What was that? And the best part: Grilled cheese for my daughter sent out blackened and burned on both sides (no peace tonight). Here's the deal: It's a high-written menu trying to justify prices which compete with Fat Hen(ballsy!) and exceed Wild Olive (both more reasonable and stratospherically a league above!) which is sub-standard compared to those two. It is in Gilligan's league. The host is charming. The food runner is a woman completely out place (who knew the food was burned but saw no reason not to serve it, so awesome). Sadly, at brunch on our first visit, the server clearly had way too many tables all over and was overwhelmed. Pass.

I had a good meal but have to knock off a bit for an apathetic server and small portions. We were told the fish of the day was salmon. When I asked if it was farmed, he informed me that it was wild Alaskan salmon. Excellent. We both ordered that, and the candied bacon brussels sprouts. When our plates arrived, we were taken aback. Not sure what kind of fish it was, but it was white. Very white. Very not salmon. It was delicious, but definitely not what we ordered. When we were finally able to get our server's attention and pointed out that it was not salmon, he replied, "Oh, well the chef went home and so no one knows what the fish is." Um, WHAT?? Then he just left. And no, we still have no idea what fish we ate. Oh, and the $4 to-go order of brussels sprouts we took with us turned out to be about half a cup.

Went there for the first time for Brunch on Sunday. I eat Gluten free and was given a few options and decided on Steak, eggs and pimento grits. First things being said: I have never eaten grits and the only ones I have seen were from grocery store and they looked like cream of wheat. So I took a little bite thinking what would it hurt. They were SO good! The bottomless mimosa's were also good but could only handle 2.5 because not a huge orange juice person. Only negative was my steak was a bit to rare for my liking. I asked for medium and got barely dead. I didn't send it back and had it anyhow just noting that it was a little pink. The service was quick and the outdoor patio was nice. Will be taking my mom there for at least one of the meals when she is visiting.

Where ever you are in Charleston, run, don't walk to this bit of heaven in West Ashley. All food is fresh. The owner has her own Hens! Fresh flowers, sit out or in, friendly people. The owner came over to see if we were happy. Try everything, all marvelous. Interior is warm, small and like your living room. Still reading this ?? GO, NOW. I will! FrankG

We love having this little gem right down the way from us. It really is a great place for family dinner or a little date night. The food is always great and the service is so friendly! They do have brunch as well which we have tried a few times but the dinner menus are my favorite!

  • Abby L.

The food here is 5 stars for sure. Everything I tried was delicious. The house braised special feel right off the bone. However, the service - 0 stars, maybe negative stars. Even though the restaurant was less than half full we waited at the front for almost 10 minutes before we were even greeted. It went downhill from there. The wait for everything was very long, which seemed strange since there were 4 people working the front of the restaurant and less than 10 tables. After a long wait someone came by to tell us our food was almost ready. 15 minutes later another worker came by to tell us the food was being plated. Totally not true because 5 minutes after that our waitress came back to tell us they ran out of the side that came with our dishes. Such a mess. It is a shame the service was so horrid because the food really was great, but not worth putting up with the bad service.

Visited this little hidden gem outside of Charleston on Sunday for brunch (was visiting from out of town and had made a reservation). One word.......FANTASTIC!! From the moment we arrived (early) but were seated right away by the owner Nicole. Service was prompt and friendly and we did not feel rushed as first time visitors as we mulled over the options. We asked our waiter (who was very friendly and sadly I don't remember his name) whether we should try the "pancake of the day"-which was smores or the beignets, which he quickly replied, "i'll put in an order of beignets for you". Man O' man were they delicious, we inhaled them! They don't even need the chocolate sauce that comes with them! For our entrees, we finally decided on the fried chicken and biscuits and shrimp and grits, we were not disappointed!! Crispy fried chicken breast atop a split buttermilk biscuit smothered with sawmill gravy! Chicken was cooked perfectly, moist, seasoned and juicy! I savored every bite and almost placed an order for dinner! The shrimp and grits were to die for! Tasso ham pieces that would melt in your mouth, along with potatoes and rosted garlic served over their fabulous pimento cheese frits with a sweet and spicy sauce!! I can't say enough about our experience except you better make a bigger parking lot, it was crazy! 100% recommend and will be going back for dinner my next vist to town!

If you happen to come across this place, you have scored!! Just outside of downtown Charleston you will find this hidden gem. While I was in town I ate there three times! Do not leave Charleston without trying their Ham and Swiss sandwich, it will change your life. I don't know what the chef does to it, but it's pure magic in your mouth! We were so impressed after our first visit that the second time my family went we all made a point to get different dishes just to try each other's so we didn't miss out! The environment of the place is on par with their food. You can tell every little thing in the place is very intentional and had a lot of thought put into it. One of the owners is an artist and made it a point to feature local artist work within the place for purchase. Love the support of the local art community! We got to speak with the owners and can see why they're food is so good. They are a married couple, one from New York and the other from Mississippi. They had to be two of the friendliest people we meet on our trip down there. They were very welcoming and humble making our experience every time that much better. Five stars fully earned! Don't miss out on this one.

Amazing. A little bit off the path but totally, completely and utterly worth it. Great atmosphere, beautiful low country decor and impeccable food. The pimento cheese appetizer is worth it's weight in gold, the sweet tea is the way your grandmother used to make it... And the bang bang shrimp and grits as well as the fried chicken are the most soulful I've ever had. The food will take a bit of time but it's bc most things are made to order and Ingredients are fresh.

Stopped in for a late lunch. The restaurant is in a small house off of Savannah Highway. For appetizer got the fried pickles which were ok. For entree ordered the bang bang shrimp buns with a side of Parmesan truffle fries. The sauce on the shrimp was very tasty complimented the sweet buns the shrimp was in. Fries were good too loaded with parmesan. I was too stuffed to get dessert , but I'll have to try their beignets next time.

Tuesday night is apparently a night they run specials and this place is hopping. We got an appetizer, bang bang shrimp, very good. I got the pork chop and (essentially) fries. The fries were great, the pork chop was kind of bland honestly. I switched dishes with the hubs, he got the catch of the day (mahi mahi) with grits. The fish was good. The grits were bland. There were 4 in our party, everyone agreed the appetizers were the best part. The time before when we came for lunch, it was better.

Te egg, bacon, cheese, croissant is great an huge. Cute, small place right outside Charleston. Very friendly, prompt service. My parents got the pancake special (blueberry) and they were loaded with berries. Def a must stop place on your way from Charleston to Beaufort.

Some of the best local food in the Area. Kudos to the chef for last nights awesome dinner and dessert! We started with some amazing cheesy broccoli/bacon balls and soup. Then had Bison braised short ribs and creamy Alfredo linguini lamb and ham. Finished off with a custom s'mores dessert! No complaints. Great service and great food west of the Ashley!

Angel Oak is a perfect little place out here on Johns Island! The decor is absolutely adorable and the food is really great as well! You can almost always expect to see Nicole (the owner) at the front door greeting customers. She is so sweet and you can tell she truly cares about the place. Her husband is the chef and really knows what he is doing! The food is locally sourced and always fresh. Every time my mom visits from up north she has to go here! Reasonably priced and great service! I would suggest making reservations - it can get busy!

You can make no mistakes when choosing what to eat. Everything is good. Herbs are straight from the garden out front and the "farm to table" concept is practiced religiously. The staff is very savvy about the food and drinks they are serving. I've met head chefs who are less knowledgeable about their own menu than the wait staff of Angel Oak, proving that the owners care about more than just putting out a dish and turning tables. If you are going for the first time...do not leave without either the Crab Cake app. or the Fried Green Tomatoes.

Overall I would say Angel Oak is quite a nice brunch spot. Our waitress was friendly but didn't hover. We shared an order of beignets. My fellow diners enjoyed them, but I felt they were underdone in the middle. I ordered the low country benedict and enjoyed it. The hollandaise could have been more seasoned, but overall it was good. My fiancé had the croque madame and enjoyed it. The other diner had the chicken and biscuits. She felt the biscuits were so-so, but there wasn't enough gravy. The chicken was very tender though. We also ordered a side of the pimento cheese grits, but they came out cold and were under seasoned. The restaurant is a bit loud because of it being one open room, but the fresh flowers on each table are a nice touch. I also like that they use local ingredients. The food came fairly quickly as well. Overall, a nice brunch spot and we will try dinner at some point.

Loved this place! Found it on Yelp. When we pulled in, we weren't sure about it as the outside is not very attractive. But inside is great and the food was even better! We went early as we didn't have a reservation and barely squeaked in at 5:45 for an early dinner. We saw numerous groups turned away later. Great, unique food. Everything we had was wonderful. Service was outstanding too. Can't wait to return.

Best place in the area! Owned by a sweet couple. Husband is the chef and his wife is the main hostess. They are friendly and welcoming! They have great daily specials! Banana pudding is to die for! Have to eat here!!

Weird experience but great food. We came in for lunch after visiting the actual Angel Oak. When we pulled up, there was a waiter outside smoking a cigarette. He waved. When we walked in, nobody was there to greet us, no diners either. I walked out to check and make sure they were open, and they were. We saw chefs in the back looking pretty busy but they didn't see us. We kept saying, "hello?", but no answer. After five minutes, Mr. Cigarette came in and sat us down next to the only table in the restaurant that was dirty. We were slightly annoyed since he was clearly the only waiter and he felt the need to finish his cigarette before cleaning up or coming back in to seat us. While he was nice, he mumbled ever.single.word he said, making us struggle to understand him. Like I said, the food was good. We shared fried green tomatoes and then both of us had the shrimp and grits. Very impressed with that. We came here based on the Yelp reviews so there is a good chance that our service experience was a fluke, however...it's not the kind of place that I could rave about to my friends for fear that they would experience that weird service. I usually have a lot of sympathy for servers because they have a tough job. But we were the only two diners for the entire time we were there.....

Bring your patience, could be excellent but they had a bit of a service problem, at least on Sunday. Two of stopped in for brunch, there were two empty tables for two, and no parties of two waiting, there seemed to be only one party of 5 waiting. They were so busy trying to seat that party that they didn't even acknowledge our presence standing there waiting. After about 10 minutes of being ignored we left. Based upon the positive reviews we might try again. (PS what was frustrating is that we could see the person who was getting people seated standing at one table having a nice long chat. How nice..)

Awesome ! Best meal ever. The walnut ricotta ravioli of the day was amazing. The orange brûlée and beignets were the best we've ever tasted. The shrimp dishes were outstanding as were the seared scallops. And don't forget the fried pickles:). Can't wait to come back!

Seriously - the best fried chicken, by FAR, that we have ever sampled. This place is small, homey, nothing great to look at - but the best dinner we had all week. The fried chicken was exceptional. Moist, tender, crispy with an amazing honey drizzle. Yummy. Mac and cheese was creamy and delicious. The Brussels sprouts were candied with bacon. And absolutely mouth watering. Excellent food, great atmosphere. I, just glad a don't live close. I'd have a serious fried chicken addiction. Check this place out.

Awesome place. Great food. Bacon on everything. Fried chicken was phenomenal. Crab cakes were excellent. Macaroni and cheese was the best I've ever had. Beignets better than world famous cafe du monde in New Orleans. Highly recommend this place.

My wife and I spotted this restaurant while on vacation a couple weeks ago. She had the Shrimp and Grits and I had the Honey Fried Chicken. Best fried chicken I've had in years. My wife loved her meal as well. To bad it's not in Texas. Our waiter was awesome.

Mostly great things to say about this restaurant. The food is excellent and the service it's good, definitely worth checking out. The only problem I had was the noise level and it wasn't just me, all the tables around were complaining about it as well. If the owner reads this, please put noise dampening boards on ceiling. The tin ceiling you have currently is intensifying the noise level.A couple pieces of plywood, foam, fabric and a few hours would do wonders. Other than the noise, you have a gem of a restaurant. Keep up the great work.

As a New Yorker, I am accustom to a generous assortment of incredible dining. Visiting Charleston for the past few days, during the excitement of restaurant week, I scrutinized and researched the plethora of wonderful choices to find where I would dine. My selections proved to be fruitful as I drank and ate at some of the more popular restaurants who touted great reviews. Then, I experienced the most delightful find on my sightseeing travel to the majestic and historic Angle Oak Tree on Johns Island. YES, there is a restaurant treasure worth driving from downtown Charleston, twenty minutes south. It is the Angel Oak Restaurant located at 3669 Savannah Highway, Johns Island, SC. Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!! The food melted my senses to a stunned awe as I was presented with one treat after another. Many of their delectable dishes not only challenged the fine eateries in the famed downtown Charleston array, but also surpassed them. The cuisine was a mix of rustic and playful shabby chic blended with great attention to detail and artistic flair. The menu reflected a sincere effort to support the local farms in the area, capitalizing on the seasonal and regional bounty. The Angel Oak is truly a find as I love to savor the authentic flair within my travels. The staff was extremely attentive and friendly. I personally loved seeing local artwork on display and available for sale. This place was oozing charm and I was loving every minute of it as I not only went for lunch, but returned for dinner the next evening. The menu was well rounded both for lunch and for dinner. I selected the ham and brie sandwich. The melted brie smothered the ham and was accented with apple butter and pepper jelly. It was unbelievable delicious. I can honestly say that this was the best lunch I have had in a very long time. Again, it wasn't downtown, easy to get to... and a nice change of pace. The selections were very reasonably priced. The wide variety of beverage complimented the dishes as wines were paired with entrees designed by Executive Chef Jay Kees. There was some excellent beers available as well. For lunch or dinner, my suggestion is to try the Bang Bang Shrimp buns. I can't even fairly describe and give this indulgence true justice. Trust me.... Incredible!! Go and feast. You will be happy you did. You can even visit the magnificent Angel Oak Tree on your journey! Enjoy!

5 dinners on a Friday night. Entrees were just meh. Got the feeling that all the food had potential, but the only rave reviews were for the vegetable sides. Not worth the $100+ we spent. Service from Mallory was excellent.

We used to go to Angel Oak at least once a week. The breakfast/brunches have always been outstanding. As for dinner, after a while things started to go downhill. The service got slower and lackadaisical, prices went up, and the quality of the food diminished. The pimento cheese grits have been runny and bland on our last few visits. They arent very accommodating when they run out of an item (which seems to happen a lot). Every time we give it another chance, we are disappointed and feel like we have completely wasted our money.

Excellent brunch spot. The mimosas could be stronger, they put ice in my mimosa I don't know what that's about. However, they are $10 bottomless which you can't beat. The food is outstanding. Everything on the menu looked really good. The outside patio is very nice to sit on if the weather is nice. I would def come back, and I would recommend to others.

What a great place to eat. CIA trained chef and his wife in a very quaint and upbeat place. You'll get biscuits not bread to start and they are fabulous. Home made everything at Angel Oak. No freezer or microwave! All fresh and local. I had braised pork shank on grits with spinach. Others had special pasta and the fried chicken. Very reasonably priced and great service from Mark. Nice job. Keep up the good food and attitudes!

I was wonderfully surprised with the meal we had! The fried chicken was the best I've had in Charleston, the shrimp appetizer was fabulous and the pork chops, which I normally would not order, were superb! Our waiter matched wine with our apps and then with our meals. This was all included in the 50$ Tuesday night special. This place is a hidden gem in West Ashley!

Absolutely delightful place, quaint atmosphere, fantastic food, and friendly staff and owners. My husband had shrimp and grits with brussel sprouts. Creamy grits, excellent spicing on the shrimp, and nice grill flavor on the brussel sprouts. I had ham and Brie sandwich, nice toasted bread and sweet apple butter, all quite yummy. The croquettes were perfectly crisp and seasoned nicely. Best meal we had in the whole weekend at Charleston. Couldn't pass up dessert when we read that the owner was a pastry chef, and the beignets were scrumptious.

Finally, a spot on JI to make a weekly trip! Brunch is to die for, hands down the best in charleston. We have had brunch all over, but this is the best! Get the Lowcountry Benedict it's heaven on a plate. Superior service, awesome atmosphere and the owner Nicole is so sweet! We will be back again and again!

If you visit Charleston, drag yourself away from the downtown hustle and bustle and treat yourself to the BEST fried chicken ever. We had dinner yesterday evening at Angel Oak. I had the pork chops and my wife had the fried chicken. Both were excellent. My chops were breaded and fried and came with fresh green beans and croquet potatoes. Everything was cooked perfect. My wife raved about the fried chicken, homemade Mac and cheese and the fresh collard greens. The place is eclectic and fun. The service is great, and the next time we are in Charleston we will definitely eat there again.

We came here at the end of a busy rush which caused them to be out of some of the dishes we were thinking of trying. Beignets were AWESOME, nothing like any I have tried before. Slightly crispy on the outside and melt in your mouth good on the inside with a little chocolate - just sinfully yummy! Shrimp and grits were tasty. Overall wonderful meal. Wish they had a kids menu.

My friend and I visited Angel Oak upon recommendation from the local B&B we were staying at for the evening on July 5th. Upon arriving, we weren't even acknowledged until about 1 minute later when the "manager" was done talking to her waitstaff. Once seated, the manager made it known that her husband was the chef and they owned the restuarant. She asked specifically if we would like "tap water" or in other words, the free water. We sat down to have dinner about 7pm and once we tried to order, the waitress told us, they had already been out of shrimp for the evening (at 7pm!). The waitress took a long time refill our free water and since she didn't write our order down, she forgot to place an order of the "Parmesan truffle" fries. She blamed it on the kitchen, but that was just an excuse for her forgetting the order, because our medium well burger had already come out, ahead of the fries. Once the Parmesan truffle fries came out, they were clearly just regular fries, no truffle oil or Parmesan. When I asked the waitress, she seemed confused and said, "Oh they must have forgotten to put the Parmesan on them" I told her to take them back, because they were not want the menu depicted them to be. I had to ask for ketchup two times before the waitress brought us extra. The waitress nor the manager ever did a check on how our food was.

Fourth time here and everything is perfect! Lunch, Dinner or Sunday Brunch are all home runs for great local food and service with the perfect balance of elegance and casual ambiance. Everyone asks where chefs around here eat, well this is one of my favorites! Can't wait to come back!

The decor is really cute and the place is really small. I had high hopes for this place based on the reviews. I ordered the country fried steak which came with 2 pieces. The first piece I started to cut into was bleeding raw and after 5 minutes of waiting for our waitress to appear I informed her it was a little too raw for my liking. She apologized and took it back to get me another order. After sitting with my company and watching them eat and nearly finish my plate finally came with even one less steak than it originally had. When the bill came I noticed that I still got charged full price for my experience and with having one less piece. Needless to say I will NOT be going back there nor will I recommend that place to anyone I know.

Well worth the drive from Mount Pleasant, Angel Oak is a cozy little restaurant with soft yellow walls, and blue and white toile accents. As opposed to a stuffy hostess stand, as you walk in there's a welcoming farm table decorated for the season. I really like that touch, it makes you feel as if you're in someone's home. We had great service and were treated like royalty. Everyone was extremely attentive. Instead of bread, we were served boiled peanuts. A southern staple, I'd never had them before. My husband and I really liked them. For starters we had home-made ricotta served with toast points and local honey, fried green tomatoes, and BBQ mac and cheese. All were delicious. The fried green tomatoes were served with pimento cheese and a red pepper sauce, yum! And the mac and cheese was different, but we really liked it, think pork BBQ with creamy cheesy mac on top. For dinner, hubby had the salmon and I had the pepper steak and then the beignets for dessert. We waddled out completely satisfied. Thanks to owners Nicole and Jay for spoiling us.

On our recent vacation to seabrook island we took a chance on Angel Oak when The Fat Hen was booked up. I'm so glad we did. We came back in the same week. We ordered the fried chicken which may be the best I've ever had. We also had the burger with pimento cheese. It was delicious. My favorite was the shrimp and grits. Absolutely wonderful. Will be back the next time we are in town.

My partner and I were first time visitors to South Carolina and were looking for good southern food. We were not disappointed. This place is fantastic. Friendly staff, warm inviting atmosphere, and the food is delicious! During our short trip we ended up going there twice. The buttermilk fried chicken is amazing, so is their signature dessert dish, and everything else for that matter.

What a fantastic restaurant! For a small restaurant I was blown away by the high quality and DELICIOUS food! I went with my parents and all of our food came out hot and fresh. The fried pickles are TO DIE FOR! My mother had the fried chicken which was easily the best fried chicken I've had to date! The same goes for the shrimp and grits I got and the catch of the day my father had! All around a fantastic experience with great service, looking forward to coming back very soon!

The food here is so good! Comparable to a more expensive downtown spot. The prices can't be beat either. It's also family friendly. I can't say enough how much I like this place. This is quickly becoming a regular place for my husband and I.

You should go here. It's a bit out of the way, but you should go here. My girlfriend and I went here for restaurant week: dinner for two for $50, add wine pairings for $15 each. We elected to have the wine pairings. We were greeted and seated by the hostess, who also happens to be the wife of the head chef. She seemed like a nice lady, and throughout the night was really invested in making sure we had everything we needed. Appetizer was smoked salmon with capers and avocado spread on these little crumbly biscuit things. Really, really good; perfect balance of flavors. Her entree was chicken and dumplings, which I tried and thought was fantastic (those were some of the densest dumplings I've ever had). My entree was fried chicken, collards, and macaroni and cheese. The collards were perfect; I'm really picky about my collards, but these had the perfect texture and were served with a pepper vinegar that really brought it all together. The mac and cheese was just plan ol' super cheesey awesomeness. Now the fried chicken. Oh the fried chicken. Wow. It was so juicy. I mean, so juicy and tender. The skin was supremely crispy but not battered too thickly so it didn't get in the way. The coup de gras of the chicken was this sweet honey glaze that I was initially skeptical of, but wound up really enjoying. It was spread sparingly over the outside of the chicken, so it wasn't overpowering, but added an excellent flavor. Dessert was beignets. They took about 15 minutes to come out, but as they were made fresh on the spot (and also served with chocolate sauce), it was worth the wait. I don't know much about wine, but the wine parings were excellently chosen, so I'm certain the waitstaff would be knowledgeable about their wine list if you were to have any questions.

This place is excellent. We went with a large group and sat at the family table. The food was perfect, as was the service. I had the oysters and fried chicken. This had the best collard greens I ever had. Everyone we dined with enjoyed their meal. The owner was very accommodating and offered friendly hospitality! I look forward to returning very soon.

Love love LOVE this place! We discovered Angel Oak a couple of months ago, and now we make a regular appearance. They have awesome food, and a great selection of microbrews, which is a must for us since we're from Colorado. Definitely love the salmon, the wine, and certainly the shrimp and grits. It's all delicious and the staff is friendly. I've never left this place disappointed in any way.

Can't comment on the food because the customer service was so poor that I actually walked out! I went during restaurant week with my parents who were visiting for my birthday. My husband and I always go to several places for restaurant week and veg out with the 3 courses. However I was not trying to force my parents to do the same, who are lighter and simple eaters. But the owner herself rudely said we either all had to order the 3 courses or all off the regular menu. Meaning they want to force people to over eat or they are willing to make less money. Charleston is a place of exceptional and plentiful food as well as being known for hospitality. This couple who own/run the place should go back to NY where they came from. I was astonished they could act that way especially when the restaurant is far out and lacking uniqueness or innovation. They are a disgrace to Charleston dining.

Ask for Dwayne- he will make you feel welcome, he will give you excellent service, he'll tell you all about the food and beer and even recommend that you visit the actual Angel Oak. We were visiting Charleston over Christmas and I luckily went on my YELP app to find a good and authentic low country cooking restaurant. It was my lucky day! YELP reviewers gave this place high marks and it was near us so my group of 7 drove on over. The blue plate special that day was fried chicken and collards and I am not lying when I tell you it WAS THE BEST DAMN FRIED CHICKEN I EVER HAD. We started our late lunch with the fried green tomatoes and an arugula salad. EXCELLENT! Their beer selection was so interesting and some of us had the sweet potato lager (I think?) anyway, it was delicious! All of us had the fried chicken except for my daughter who ordered the buffalo chicken wraps. Tender chicken in delicious buffalo wing sauce wrapped in cold, crisp lettuce with a blue cheese dressing. REALLY GOOD. For dessert we had the beignets which came with homemade caramel and chocolate sauces. When we raved about them, Dwayne actually went back to the kitchen and got the recipe for us! As if it couldn't get any better, Dwayne brought us all a complimentary champagne to toast the new year! It was so mind blowing GOOD. Go. Now. You won't regret it. And this place deserves to be open!

Wonderful, marvelous meal on July 5, 2013! My word! What wonderful food, and a lot of it. The fried chicken dinner is a large breast, with thigh and drumstick, with included sides of greens and mac and cheese. Too much for me to eat, as I also had the chicken liver appetizer. (Do try it if you like any kind of liver.) My wife had the flounder (pieces, not a whole one) on top of pimento cheese grits. She had the bacon snack-also great. The Josh Estates Chardonnay was light and good. EVERYTHING WAS GREAT!

Do not miss this authentic gem! The food is amazingly fresh and spot on southern. The menu is varied, the portions are generous and the flavor is slap your momma good. Everything from the old standards to the creative new comers mixed the best of Charleston and New Orleans on a perfect menu. We will not only come back but will also recommend this culinary treasure to everyone we know who is visiting the Charleston area. A great find!! .

Hidden Gem!!! This place is amazing! I was visiting Charleston for vacation and found this place on 17 after sightseeing. It is worth the quick trip from downtown Charleston if you are looking for a charming restaurant with excellent service and DELICOUS FOOD! I need to mention I am a professional chef and have worked in hospitality field for over 20 years...so listen up! I highly recommend the Piggy Mac- Basically the best sweet BBQ pulled pork I have ever had smothered in Mac and Cheese. The Chef's Beignets are a delight as well. When I asked for the recipe I was told it's a secret recipe and I have to admit it should stay that way!! I tried my girlfriend's shrimp and grits as well, a Carolina classic with homemade bacon and sautéed onions, and creamy grits.... Phenomenal. She also had the Banana pudding, which is highly addictive, you might want to order a couple! Oh and did I mention the service? Duane - (I think) was my server, and he was greeting, seating, serving like a champ. He made me and my girlfriend feel like we were the most important people in his world. If you are living in the area or visiting, this needs to be on your to do list. I really enjoyed the beer and wine list, not too big and stuffy, just the right size and has something for everyone. I wish I found this earlier during my trip...Angel Oak is going to see me again soon!!

Dined there for lunch with friends. Country atmosphere good food. I had Cobb salad. It was "OK", would have preferred romaine lettuce instead of iceberg. Friends had the country fried steak and buttermilk fried chicken. The steak serving was huge, and the fried chicken was moist and tender. Fried green tomato was topped with pimento cheese. Cute place.

So we tried this place after reading the reviews on here, and I wasn't disappointed. I had a chicken pasta special that was full of flavor and very good. It could have been a little warmer but I was happy. My fiancé had the lamb, which was cooked exceptionally well and the pimento cheese grits were amazing. The ambiance is nice, the owner came to the table and introduced herself and that was nice. We also had oysters and fried pickles for appetizers and they were good. The bread was also quite tasty. All in all, a very good restaurant with a great menu and tons of specials. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars was my food could have been hotter.

This restaurant is one of my favorites in Charleston. Far better than anything else in West Ashley and it gives the "big" restaurants downtown a run for their money. Using the best local ingredients that the area has to offer the owners have managed to bring out food and flavors from Charleston that I had never before experienced (and I'm a local). My favorite appetizer is between the smoked trout with the avocado mouse and the Fried Green Tomatoes. The fish really keeps the smokey flavor without it being too overpowering. And the mouse? What a wonderful combination! For dinner I always enjoy the seasonal overstuffed ravioli. From sweet potato to crab stuffed it is always delicious and frequently changing. Recently it was filled with bleu cheese and topped with bleu cheese crumbles and filet tips. The sauce was so creamy and the steak was cooked to perfection! My favorite part of any meal is dessert and they have hit home with their house made banana pudding with salted caramel and vanilla wafers. It is full of flavor and the caramel adds a really nice touch. All in all, how can I describe the food, the atmosphere, the service and the overall restaurant? A flawless and wonderful experience every time. This restaurant is truly a local gem and I simply cannot wait to return for "Unwined Wednesday" which is a weekly special where they sell all bottles and glasses of wine for half off. I'm determined to become a connoisseur!

My wife and I had lunch here today on our way out of Savannah, we found it courtesy of Yelp. Nicole, the owner, was our waitress. Let me start by saying how great this place is...it may be perfect. A warm inviting atmosphere where you feel truly welcome. Great menu, great beer, great service. Please frequent places like this, we need business like this. Stay away from the chain restaurants and eat in a place where you will not only have a delicious meal, but where you will also feel welcome and know you are eating the best quality locally grown food. Thank you Nicole, we had a wonderful time.

We had the pleasure of visiting Angel Oak for the first time tonight and I have to say that I am very impressed. Enjoyed the fried green tomato app, house salad w/ sherry vinaigrette, and the salmon on a cedar plank with brussell sprouts and mashed potato croquettes. Their craft beer selections were fantastic and the beignets for dessert were out of this world. Our server, Mark, and the rest of the staff was super-knowledgeable and attentive. Cannot wait to go back. Thank you for being so close to Johns Island!!

Angel Oak is the latest occupant of this cute little spot on Savannah Highway just south of Main Road, and I have to say it is definitely my favorite so far. The husband and wife couple that have moved in here have really made it their own with lots of personal touches that really make the dining area feel like home. If you have been into this space previously, be prepared to enjoy a complete makeover. The main space now looks like a proper dining room and the servers are all well versed and friendly. We were warmly greeted by Nicole, one of the owners, and promptly seated. All of their appetizers sounded intriguing so we tried a good variety. The winners were definitely the crab cake and the fried bacon. The crab cake was pure, sweet blue crab with just enough to hold it together and bring out the natural flavors. A spicy remoulade was drizzled across the plate that gave a nice balance. The fried bacon consisted of a plate of lightly battered, smoky thick cut bacon strips, paired with a spicy buffalo dipping sauce to amp up the flavor. The port wine pate was nice and creamy, and came potted in a little glass mason jar. It was paired well with toast points and vinegary pickled radishes and a nice chow-chow. The lobster mac and cheese sounded divine, but we found the cheese sauce to be too oily for our liking. The entrees were all very tasty, generous portion sizes and expertly cooked. We sampled the braised short rib and shrimp and grits. The short rib was cooked perfectly, it flaked away with a fork and a gentle touch. This was definitely one of the most tender pieces of meat I have had in a while, and could only have been improved if a little more of the demi-glace was present. The stone ground grits it sat atop were creamy and hearty, and a buttery sauce and some micro-herbs brought it all together. The bang-bang shrimp and grits were decent, flecked with crisp bites of smoky bacon. However this dish needed a bit more gravy and spice to live up to its bangin name. The execution of all the dishes was top notch, technique is no issue here. However I think if the chef were a little more liberal with the seasoning and sauces he would have a home-run. The wine list is extremely short and several essential varietals were noticeably absent. I would suggest a broader range of styles and prices to better appeal to the wine drinking crowd. The beer selection was broad and even featured some local brews. It appeared that the beer selection will vary on a rotational basis, with the current offerings displayed on a chalk board. Overall, Angel Oak shows a lot of promise and I am excited to see a passionate team at the helm of this establishment. Having not even been open for a week, I think it is fair to say that they will only get better. The owner checked in on us throughout the meal to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. The little touches, like the slate serving platters, create a wonderful ambiance. We look forward to trying them again after they have had some time to work out the fine details. It is well worth the drive to give this place a try, it is downtown quality food in a more comfortable West Ashley environment.

The food is excellent. We stopped in for the new lunch menu. My mom had the chicken salad and I had the pulled pork with mac n cheese. It was so great I had to tell the people at the next table! I was able to talk with the owner for a while. Wonderful people! The atmosphere is great and best of all the owners care about their customers. I had a five star experience. If you didn't... you should let the owner know. They are working hard to make it a place that everyone wants to come.

This is one for the memory book - fantastic! Delicious food and drink and good service. We had fried chicken that beats our grandmothers' southern fried. Good collards, grits, pimento cheese and creamy yummy Mac and cheese. Enjoyed southern pecan brown ale with the meal. We will try to return.

We were attracted to this restaurant by the image of a dinner on a brochure we picked up at the office of a local RV park--what an unexpected find!! From restaurant website: "The approach at Angel Oak Restaurant is simple, to obtain the freshest ingredients that the seasons allow, and present them in a way that would best represent the area. The menu changes often to include what is in season. Our lunch menu provides people with fresh, quick, made from scratch food that is rustic and delicious. Dinner takes a more innovative approach to southern American cuisine." Food is from local sources. Innovative menu included 12 asterisked items that can be made gluten free! Supper entrees range from Buttermilk Fried Chicken at $16 to Roasted Duck at $23--Beef Tenderloin at $22! We enjoyed the Fried Green Tomato appetizer, the Beef Tenderloin, the Planked Hazelnut Salmon (wild caught)--all presented well and delicious. Excellent service by friendly and well trained staff. Interesting menu + excellent food + reasonable prices + excellent service = 5 stars. Quaint informal atmosphere with pleasant, relaxing low volume background music. A wall between the dining area and the kitchen was made of very old, weathered doors. Corrugated steel ceiling resulted in a somewhat noisy room when lots of diners are present--a tiny drawback. We will go there again and again and again.

I saw a dish called the piggy Mac but it wasn't on the lunch menu, they made it for me anyway. My husband had the fish sandwich with candied Brussels sprouts, it was outstanding. The waitress helped us pick a beer that was excellent too. Overall a very enjoyable lunch. And the dessert....beignet, were awesome.

If you like food that is cooked fresh to order, you MUST eat here. Four of us for lunch and each of us were impressed with the flavor of every dish. Fried chicken to die for. I had a vege plate with fresh collards, fresh Brussels sprouts and Mac and cheese and added the Pork Bun appetizer. Ooh. Unfrigging real! We topped it with a bowl of fresh peach cobbler. If you don't eat here, you're a damn fool . I know food. I am a retired chef. Asta lavista.

This place is wonderful. Very friendly staff, nice cozy atmosphere, and amazing food. The menu is very creative, and changes constantly. The beignets will knock your socks off. I just hope it doesn't get TOO popular, or we won't be able to get a reservation.

My wife, mother in law and I just returned from a thoroughly disappointing meal at the Angel Oak. We bought a Groupon and came in with high expectations. The menu looked great on the internet, and upon arriving we were greeted with a very quaint (and Brooklyn-esque) dining room. We were seated by Nicole (the owner), who was very personable. She told us about the ethos of the restaurant and sent our server over. After a few minutes he came by and we ordered appetizers, entrees and a bottle of wine. Our server began to pour wine into my mother in law's glass, and we all noticed there was a large fly in the glass (as well as a piece of "cardboard" from the box of glasses). Our waiter whisked the glass full of wine away from the table, and returned with AN EMPTY GLASS! A full glass of our wine was poured out, and we were offered neither a replacement...nor an apology. The wine we ordered was also sold by the glass. Any respectable restaurant would have immediately replaced the tainted wine with a free glass. Nope. Not at the Angel Oak. Pestilence = lost wine. The food arrived 15 minutes after the insect incident, and was "meh" at best. The much touted "fried bacon" appetizer was something you'd expect to find under a heat lamp. At a 7-11. In Dubuque. At 3:00 am. The bacon itself was somehow limp and chewy, and coated with a layer of breading that was a half an inch think and had the texture of dried paper mache. The lobster mac n' cheese was passable, but nothing that couldn't be made at home in 90 seconds. The chunks of lobster were of decent size, but there were 3 in the entire serving. There was no crust on the cheese; it would have benefited greatly from a short blast under a salamaner. I've had better mac 'n cheese at a church picnic in Michigan 15 years ago. My order of meatloaf was marginal, though again nothing that couldn't have been easily created at home. The thick coating of overly sweet barbecue sauce overpowered any potential flavor the meatloaf itself may have had. The side of carrots was great - it was definitely the highlight of the meal. The mashed potatoes had a good texture, but the seasoning just wasn't there. It was as if the chef seasoned them based on Winston Churchill's directions for adding vermouth to a martini: look at a bottle of vermouth while pouring the gin. My wife and mother in law both ordered the shrimp carbonara. The pasta was advertised as made in house, but that's either not the case or it was cooked for 5 times longer than it should have been. The texture reminded me of slightly stale toothpaste...the noodles managed to be as creamy as the overly heavy white sauce. The kitchen also neglected to include the egg, which is a traditional component of a carbonara. We were offered dessert but declined. At this point we had simply had enough. At 8:15pm we walked out, and were told to "have a good afternoon." It could have been great. Heck, it could have even been good. But it wasn't. It was solidly one star cuisine in a town that offers way too many 4 and 5 star restaurants to warrant a return trip.

We bought a groupon that brought us to this cute little place. What a pleasant surprise. The food was excellent and the manager and wait staff were super friendly and helpful. They had a nice selection of appetizers and entrees. My favorite was the plank smoked salmon. Mmmmmm. Also the crab cake appetizer was awesome. I can see that this place will be popular and it's now very large so go early or you may have to wait. Not a huge wine list, but some nice selections to choose from. I know we will go back!

My boyfriend and I ate lunch here on our way out of visiting the Charleston area on vacation. We really like "good food" and had a bad experience the night before at Robert Irvine's Eat in Hilton Head (the food was so disappointing there). Anyway, we had high expectations going to Angel Oak Restaurant as our last meal in the low country and Angel Oak fulfilled all of them. We were so impressed. The restaurant is a cute little fairly quiet quaint place, and even has outdoor seating, but just a great lunch experience with great service. We ordered the shrimp and grits (!!!) amazing, and fried chicken with mac and cheese and collard greens, also amazing. The food, service and atmosphere were great and we couldn't have been happier. The server even knew we were headed to the airport and gave us our bill right away. I highly recommend this restaurant, and it was very affordable too!

Angel Oak is close to my house, so we decided to try this out for restaurant week rather than fighting the crowds downtown. The mushroom soup was good, but salty. And, when asked my favorite food, I often say that it is salt. So if I think something is a bit salty, to most people it is probably overpowering. For the entree I had the shrimp and grits. It was a little bland, but the shrimp was cooked well. The grits needed... Salt. Perhaps I should have poured some of the mushroom soup on them. My boyfriend had the blue cheese ravioli and filet medallions. The medallions were OK; the ravioli was pretty good. The sauce really tasted like a stroganoff, which not sure really fit the filet and blue cheese. For dessert, he had the banana pudding and I had the goat cheese cheesecake. His banana pudding was mediocre at best; the salted caramel on top was not appetizing. My cheesecake was pretty good; it was a unique twist on cheesecake with the goat cheese. I did the wine pairing with my meal. The pours were really light. For $15, I probably received a little over a glass. The 2 glasses were served in a champagne flute for some reason, and they were about half full. The wine was OK. Not sure of the names, but it was their suggested pairing. Even downtown you'd get a much better pour for $7.50/glass. Overall, the meal was OK. Nothing to write home about, but no real complaints. Service was fine and the Chef's significant other introduces herself and explains the restaurant. She and the server were both very personable. Will I be back? Maybe. And that's only because of the proximity to my house (like a mile and a half). But there are much better restaurants downtown and on johns island for the prices they charge. I'm at Southside 17 bar and grill tonight and am just as happy with my food, bar food (albeit "upscale bar food") as I was last night at a purported fine dining restaurant. And our bill will be half of what we paid last night....

Once again a wonderful meal. I have yet to be disappointed with the food here. Love the use of fresh local ingredients supporting local farmers and producers is great. Thanks to the staff for the great service and to chef for the great food. Highly recommend eating here it is well worth the trip. We'll be back on the 20th of July for the Legare farms breakfast, this would be a great time to try out the fresh local produce and meats that they sell.

Angel Oak Restaurant has only been open for a few months, but already I have visited several times with my family. There are several reasons for this: first and foremost, the food is delicious. I try something different each time I visit and have yet to be disappointed. Secondly, the owners are always in the restaurant (at least they have been each time I've gone), which is rare for a fine-dining establishment in Charleston these days. The third reason I love to go to Angel Oak whenever I get a chance is the unpretentious Mom-an-Pop feel that infuses the restaurant with warmth. Angel Oak fits in nicely with other restaurants on John's Island that do sophisticated food in a "down-home" atmosphere. Their attention to seasonality as well as their commitment to sourcing meat and produce locally makes them a welcome addition in the Charleston culinary scene. And you don't even have to pay for parking.
